What is a cover letter?
A cover letter is a short, tailored letter that accompanies a CV. Some degree apprenticeship applications ask candidates to upload a cover letter. At the bottom of this page are links to two example cover letters. You can find more on LiveCareer.
The hallmarks of a great cover letter
Tailored: As with your CV, it’s essential that each cover letter you write is unique and aligned with the job description and/or person specification. Again, you can use AI to help. Mention the company by name, reference the role, and demonstrate that you have done your research (e.g. into the company, its values or the specific role).
It’s a match: A cover letter allows you to overtly state why you’re a great match for the job. Link your skills and experience to those in the job description.
Evidence: A cover letter enables you to back up your claims with evidence (e.g. teamwork from volunteering).
Overlaps: Your cover letter is an additional opportunity to sell yourself. Don’t repeat exactly what’s in your CV.
Professional presentation: Match the style and font to your CV. And, of course, check your spelling and grammar carefully.
