How to ace in-person group interviews
There’s a lot of overlap between in-person group interviews and online group interviews - for example, trying not to dominate while shining at the same time. Typically, there will be one or two interviewers and between three and seven candidates. Below are some ideas to help you excel.
Listen intently
During the interview, listen carefully to the other candidates. If you build upon their answers, that demonstrates active listening and teamworking skills. How you interact with the other candidates is as important as how you interact with the assessors.
Disagree agreeably
You might find yourself profoundly disagreeing with another candidate. If this is the case, when it’s your turn, explain your thoughts constructively (and not in an argumentative manner). There’s a good chance the interviewer will agree with your point of view. In the workplace those willing to have courageous conversations are highly valued.
Introduce yourself to the other candidates
You are likely to find yourself in a waiting room with the other candidates. Politely introduce yourself and make small talk. Remember: You are being watched at all times.
Positive body language
Overt positive body language (smiling, sitting up straight, paying attention, not fidgeting etc.) will create a great impression before you’ve even opened your mouth.
Frenemies
At the end of the interview, connect with the other candidates. During the interview they are your enemy - down the line, they could become your ally.
