How to ace online group interviews
Firstly, double check the tech works perfectly and practise mock interviews (ideally with one interviewer and a number of interviewees). You should also practise turning your microphone on and off (and only keeping it on when you’re speaking). This is not an easy interview format, so carefully read the guidance below to find out how you can shine.
Eye contact
These interviews will be recorded. The interviewer will be watching you even when you’re not speaking. Stay engaged throughout, by ensuring consistent eye contact (i.e. look at the camera). Keep your camera on at all times.
Don’t domineer
Yes, you need to get noticed; you can’t be a wallflower. Yet, at the same time, you don’t want to come across as an aggressive know-it-all. Candidates who talk over their allocated time, interrupt others or don’t focus when they’re not in the spotlight, will annoy the assessor.
Comments box
You may need to use the comments box or chat function. Act professionally: write in full sentences, avoid using slang, carefully check your spelling etc.
Listen carefully
Not just to the interviewer. You have to listen to the other candidates too. It’s entirely possible that the same question will be posed to each candidate one at a time. Try to avoid repeating the same thing - but you can build upon what’s been said before. Also, whatever you do, don't ask the same question as another candidate.
Shine
There could be eight other candidates being interviewed at the same time as you. That doesn't give you much time to make a good impression. When it’s your turn to speak, take your time, and speak clearly and concisely. Fall back on your interview preparation.
Take notes
This will help you concentrate and will make you look engaged and enthusiastic.
