Get the tech right (online interviews)
For online interviews, the three additional things you need to consider are software, hardware and location. If, for example, your microphone doesn’t work, that will not look good. The best way to ensure things run smoothly is to conduct mock online interviews with a friend. Before you do this, ready the guidance below.
Software: Once you know which platform the company uses (probably Microsoft Teams, Google Meet or Zoom), you can then create your own interview link and practice with a friend.
Hardware - check the following:
Wi-Fi connection: Make sure you have a stable Internet connection. Glitchy connections make it harder to communicate effectively (e.g. body language being out of sync with the spoken words).
Speakers (or headphones): Headphones tend to be better, but can detract from your professional appearance. Use discrete headphones if possible. Work out the optimal volume level in advance.
Hardware - check the following:
Lighting: If, for example, there’s too much lighting behind you, you’ll become a silhouette. If you have the money, it’s worth investing in a LED ring light.
Microphone: Can the [mock] interviewer hear you clearly? Do you know how to mute the microphone?
Camera: You'll be expected to keep your camera on throughout the interview. Make sure your camera is angled correctly.

Surroundings
You need to find a space that’s conducive to an online interview. If you don’t have anywhere at home, ask a trusted teacher to book you a room. Do this well in advance. Also, consider the following:
Background: Blurred and fake backgrounds are unprofessional and shouldn’t be used. Try to find a room, whether at home, school or elsewhere, with a neutral, clutter-free background.
Noise: Make sure you find a quiet space where you won’t be disturbed.
