Most likely, you will walk into a room where you don’t know anyone. In that room will be company employees, other candidates and, possibly, company clients. Expect any networking event to last no longer than a couple of hours. Employers will be looking for qualities such as confidence, curiosity, enthusiasm and professionalism. That means turning your phone off and not drinking too much alcohol! Walking into a networking event can be daunting. Your ability to make small talk will be tested to the limit. Fortunately, there are lots of simple things you can do to prepare for networking events.

Write a list of questions

Think about questions you could ask other people at the event. Remember, most people love speaking about themselves! Before you ask any of these questions, establish who you’re talking to. Below are some bankers:

How long have you worked here?
What was your first impression when you joined?
What projects are you working on at the moment?
What’s one piece of advice you wish you’d had when you first joined?
What part of your work do you find the most interesting?
Where do you see the biggest opportunities in your field over the next few years?

Single people

When you first arrive, zero in on people on their own. They will be grateful that you’ve approached them and, therefore, highly likely to want to speak to you.

Buddy up

If you find yourself bonding with one person, suggest you approach other smaller groups together. There is safety in numbers.

Flit

Do not spend more than five to 10 minutes with any one person - you are there to network.

The waitress/waiter test

It's very possible that people will be coming around offering drinks etc. Demonstrating impeccable manners is essential. Some recruiters will reject any candidate that doesn’t treat everyone with respect.
